Galvanic nickel phosphorus

Technical possibilities at Metoba

Metoba offers the following techniques for processing Galvanic nickel phosphorus :

Bulk-finishing

1. Characteristics and properties

Galvanically deposited nickel-phosphorus coatings have a significantly higher hardness than conventional galvanic nickel coatings (approx. 550 HV 0.1, by heat treatment up to 1200 HV 0.1 possible). High wear and friction resistance, good solderability and high corrosion stability are further advantages of this coating, which is less expensive than chemical nickel phosphorus. Metoba deposits non-magnetic alloys with a phosphorus content of 11-13%.

2. Benefits and areas of application

In the connector industry, a high, long-term stable wear and abrasion resistance is required to ensure contact reliability, which is why nickel-phosphorus layers are often chosen as a base for subsequent precious metal layers. With a nickel-phosphorus base layer (1.5-3µm NiP), gold deposits can be minimized. An applied gold layer of 0.1µm is sufficient instead of the usual 0.8µm. Thin gold layers on the hard electrolytic nickel-phosphorus layer serve as a dry lubricant. The high hardness of the layers results in lower ductility, so that deformation after coating is limited. For this reason, a NiPhosAu coating is especially recommended for 3D applications.

Compared to standard operations for connector coatings with electrolytic nickel (0.8µm Au), thin gold plating (0.1µm Au) with electroplated nickel phosphorus is an option to reduce valuable precious metal without negatively affecting the quality.

3. Basic material

Work pieces made of steel, stainless steel, aluminium or non-ferrous metals can be reliably protected against corrosion and wear by electroplated nickel-phosphorus coatings.

4. Required delivery condition

The goods provided must be largely metallically bright. Residual oils or residual impurities must be removable with conventional aqueous alkaline degreasers. Oils containing silicone, alkali/alkaline earth and high-pressure additives must be avoided at all costs.
